Trip to Switzerland ~ Day Four

Tuesday - 31 June, 2009

We woke up on a lovely morning and went for brekkie at the hotel owned by Nicole, the owner of the house. It's just a 5-minute walk from the house.

Even the food had the 'sheep' and 'cockerel' as companions....

After taking care of our tummies, we were ready to go and explore the famous Grimsel, Furka, and Susten three-pass tour. It is much loved by motorists, motorcyclists, and even bikers with enough puff and stamina. I remember reading from one of the web sites that says: If you want to tell you've driven in Switzerland, then you must drive along one of the scenic passes'. Curious, I went to check what's so special with all these passes and boy....they ARE really special! How special are they? You'll find that out soon.

The Grimsel Pass (2,165m) led us up the snow-patched mountains through a wild and rugged landscape characterised by grey-green granite and reservoirs with mighty dams, used for hydroelectricity.

A lone biker snaking his way up....

Look at the twisty, windy, switchback road....it's like making U-turn after U-turn....all the way up and down the mountains....I was driving really very very slowly....about 30kmph...Most of the cars there drove that SLOW coz they were all tourists like us who wanted to enjoy the views.

I got excited to see snow along the road side and decided to stop the car. Once again, Shawn Eamon got his chance to play with the snow....

We stopped for lunch at the Hotel Alpenrosli, one of the 3 hotels on the top of the Grimsel Pass.

You can tell how happy he was. In fact, he was very happy EVERYDAY!

The Totensee (Dead Lake), which is icy all summer, is located right opposite the hotel.

Off we went again, heading up to the Furka Pass, one of the most scenic passes in Switzerland. The road continues around a series of hairpin bends up to the top at 2,431m. This Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film 'Goldfinger'. Vrooommmm!!!! Just like how Mr. Bond would drive....chasing the bad ones....only if I were as good at driving...

Melting snow - a common sight along the road.

Our next stop was the Rhone Glacier and the Ice Grotto. It is difficult to describe in mere words the appearance of the Rhone Glacier; it is a truly extraordinary site when seen close to. It costs sFr5 per person to get into the ice grotto which gave us the unique privilege to walk inside it.

Spectacular view of the glacier...

View from another angle...

It was very cold inside the ice grotto - only 4-5 degrees and I was wearing a pair of open-toe sandals.....I couldn't feel my toes at all!

It began to drizzle by then and we decided not to continue our journey to the Susten Pass as we thought it would be dangerous driving along those super-winding roads especially when it was slippery.

Shawn Eamon was glad to be back....to the park he liked... (He still likes it now as he mentioned the park to me yesterday!)

Our dinner.......pizzas.....

Strolling along Hoheweg....the main street.

It's been a long day for us....let's call it a day.......
