Trip to Switzerland ~ Day Three

Monday - 30 June, 2009

I was a bit reluctant to wake up this morning, knowing that I had to bid farewell to this charming little town. You'll know why I love this town after looking at the picture below.

Hotel Oberland....a good place to have your meal. Nice food with reasonable pricing. Remember to make reservations if you go during the peak season.

There's only one major road in the Lauterbrunnen Valley which makes it so quiet and peaceful.

No matter how reluctant I was to leave the Lauterbrunnen Valley, I still got into the car and continued with my journey. We were going to Lucerne, one of Europe's most heavily touristed town. The distance from here to Lucerne is 72km and it took us about an hour to reach there.

To find a free car park is close to mission impossible. Parking places are very expensive and according to my cousin who had been there, he had to find a new place to park his car once every 30 minutes. Why? That's because you are only allowed to park for 30 minutes the most (0r 45 minutes at some places) at the road side. With this in mind, I was determined to find a proper car park which I could park my car and walked around the town with peace of mind. After much research, I'd found a multi-storey car park in Lucerne which is just 5 minutes by foot to the old town, the lake and the Chapel Bridge. After setting the address of the car park to the GPS, we managed to reach this car park with ease. We were all desperate for the toilet and were very happy to find that there is a toilet in the car park! It was free for those who park their cars there as a parking ticket is needed in order for the toilet door to be opened. Cool!!!

We then went to the Restaurant Fritschi at Sternenplatz 5.Many bloggers have recommend this restaurant so I had had it in mind before coming here. It is located in a building that has an outrageous colourful replica of a medieval fresco on its facade. Prices for main courses here range from sFr24 to sFr43.

Chicken in orange sauce for Shawn Eamon

Seriously, I can't remember what this was but I know it's fish....and it was delicious....

This was the most delicious of them all - rosti. Many Swiss people consider it a national dish. It is made with grated potatoes, and depending on frying techniques, it is mixed with butter, salt and pepper, or fried in oil. YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These were what we did and saw after lunch:

The Kapellbrücke Bridge (or the Chapel Bridge) - the oldest wooden bridge in Europe which was built in the 14th century.

There are 111 double-sided triangular roof panels on the bridge. All of them were painted in the 17th century with scenes from the city's past to the present. Each of them is numbered and remember to look out for panel number 31. It shows William Tell shooting the apple on his son's head.

Café culture is treasured by the city's large population of young people. As you can see from the picture, cafés and restaurants are here in their numbers, particularly in the Old Town, on the right bank overlooking the river.

A picture that we treasure.....dad, mum and their beloved grandson enjoying their holiday....

The Wasserturm (Water Tower) which has served as a prison, a torture chamber, watchtower and treasury.

Part of the old town which has many picturesque medieval and Renaissance buildings packed along cobble-stone alleys.

Shopping for souvenirs at Lucerne old town.....Shawn Eamon liked those cowbells and wanted to get the largest available.

Alright....it was time to get to the second apartment that we had booked. It's located in Interlaken, which is about 52 km from Lucerne. It wasn't difficult to locate the apartment, thanks to the reliable GPS. We reached there at about 5.30 p.m. and Nicole, the owner of the apartment, had already been waiting for us in front of her house together with her cute little son. We were really impressed by the condition of the apartment. It's actually on the second floor of Nicole's house. Again, Shawn Eamon requested for the nicest room available.

This was the second room. It's nice but I preferred the first one....

It was time for dinner and we reached Hoheweg, the main street in Interlaken after a 10-minute walk. There are lots of shops here - souvenir shops, watch shops....you'll enjoy walking on this street if you've got enough money to spend.

This was the place where we had our dinner - Pizzeria Darafmi.

So this was my dinner. I shared wit with dad while mum had pasta with Shawn Eamon. The pizza cost us sFr30 and the pasta was sFr15. It was really pricey but it was very delicious!!!!

Walking back to our apartment. What has caught Shawn Eamon's attention? Well....if you look up the sky in Interlaken, chances of you seeing people paragliding are very high coz that's what tourists like to do there.

There's a children's playground in the park on our way home and Shawn Eamon had a good time there. HE STILL REMEMBERS THIS PLAYGROUND NOW! YOU CAN TELL HOW MUCH HE LIKES IT THERE!

Shawn Eamon refused to leave the playground until we promised him that we would bring him here the next day. Soon it's time for bed....
